Summer Horsemanship program
Beginner Horsemanship Information:
Our summer horsemanship program is designed to introduce children to riding and horse care. The program is geared toward new riders. Recommended minimum age 6 y.o. No prior riding experience is necessary. A willingness to learn and the desire to spend time with horses is a must. We love teaching beginners!
Over the course of the week your child will be taught the proper and safe way to lead, groom, saddle, and mount a horse. Riders will learn about horse anatomy, care and feeding. We’ll play horse related games and enjoy a craft as well.
Our horsemanship program takes place in the barn and includes a variety of barn chores. Some children may find the dirt and smells unpleasant. Please be realistic about your child’s interest and willingness to participate in all aspects of horsemanship.

There are three pieces of required equipment each child needs in order to participate in our riding program
1. Equestrian Helmet
2. Riding boots
3. Breeches/riding pants
All riders must wear an ASTM SEI approved equestrian riding helmet. There are no exceptions. We take safety very seriously and expect that you will also.
Helmets are neither one size fits all, nor interchangeable between sports. We cannot stress this enough- if your child arrives in a bike, scooter or ski helmet they will not be able to ride one of our horses. We do not supply helmets.
Equestrian helmets are tested by the Safety Equipment Institute (SEI) for chinstrap retention, penetration by a sharp object, and for impact absorption. These tests are specifically for horseback riding related accidents. We are licensed and insured to only teach students in an approved riding helmet. We are unwilling to put our license, our livelihood nor your child’s safety at risk. Please consider the helmet and boot requirements before registering your child for a riding program at Churchill Stables. If you are unable or unwilling to purchase the requisite equipment we request that you do not sign your child up for our program. For more information about helmet safety:
2. Riding boots- we recommend paddock boots. Acceptable alternatives are cowboy boots or another heeled leather boot. No boots with zippers on the inside leg as this damages our saddles and irritates rider’s legs. No rain nor snow boots.
3. Breeches, riding tights or long pants- no shorts for riding, in hot weather your child may change into shorts after their ride.
Every summer we’ve had one or more children arrive without an equestrian helmet and or boots. It is not fair to your child who won’t be able to ride, nor is it fair to our staff who must supervise an unhappy child. Please plan ahead so that you may purchase the equipment prior to your child’s first day of horsemanship week.
Beginner riding attire packages are reasonably priced at The Complete Equestrian located at 1 River Road in Carlisle. Be sure to mention Churchill Stables. We can not let any rider mount a horse without an approved helmet!
The balance of the program fee, $400, is due by June 1st. While we understand life gets complicated, we are unable to make any refunds. No refunds will be made for absence, withdrawal or dismissal.
